In this episode of BEHIND THE COACH — our very first episode in English — we speak with Jens Berthel Askou, who has just started his new role as head coach at Toulouse FC. Before this move, he was head coach at Motherwell in Scotland, having previously worked as assistant coach at Sparta Prague and FC Copenhagen, with earlier coaching stops in Denmark and the Faroe Islands.
In the conversation, Jens Berthel Askou talks about his footballing philosophy: an expansive, front-footed style of play combined with defensive solidity, and his belief that modern football is moving away from fixed positions, with his teams shifting fluidly between back-three and back-four systems.
The episode also covers his views on player personality and character, why he sees discipline and freedom as two sides of the same coin, and how long it typically takes a coaching staff to establish an identity at a new club. Askou shares his thoughts on data versus intuition in decision-making, his approach to leadership built on trust and calmness rather than fear, and why he finds it extremely exciting to work with the young talent at his new club.
